Medical Institutions urged to avoid offering unrecognized
postgraduate programs
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC)
has issued a directive to all medical and dental institutions or universities,
urging them to register with the council under section 25 of the PM&DC Act
in order to offer postgraduate programs.
In a letter conveyed to these institutions based
on the council's instructions, the Registrar of PM&DC has explicitly
cautioned all colleges and universities against promoting or providing any
postgraduate medical and dental programs that lack recognition.
The letter states, "Failure to comply with
this notification will lead to disciplinary proceedings under section 35(i) of
the PM&DC Act 2022." This section specifies that those who establish,
endorse, or advertise education institutions for medicine or dentistry that are
not recognized under specific sections of the Act will be deemed guilty of an
offense. This offense is punishable with rigorous imprisonment for up to five
years, a fine of up to twenty million rupees, or both, along with potential
closure of the institution.
The PM&DC has conveyed to all aspiring
postgraduate medical and dental practitioners that they should only enroll in
programs recognized by the council. The council will exclusively register
postgraduate qualifications that have undergone proper inspection and recognition
and are listed in the 2nd schedule of the PM&DC Act 2022.
The letter emphasizes that the PM&DC is
committed to establishing and upholding standards of excellence across all
medical and dental institutes in Pakistan, encompassing both undergraduate and
postgraduate education. The council intends to elevate the caliber of medical
and dental education and licensure in Pakistan while ensuring compliance with
the benchmarks set by PM&DC, including disciplinary measures against
entities and individuals falling short of these standards.
The list of acknowledged postgraduate
qualifications and institutions can be accessed on the PM&DC website at www.pmdc.pk.
