Pakistan reverses ban on celebrating Holi in educational
institutions
Following
widespread outrage on social media, education officials in Pakistan have
reversed an order that banned university students from celebrating the festival
of Holi.
The original
notice, issued by the Higher Education Commission, had prohibited campus
celebrations of Holi, citing it as an erosion of the country's Islamic
identity.
Videos on
social media showing young people engaging in Holi celebrations prompted the
ban, as it was deemed detrimental to the country's image.
However,
after receiving criticism, the education commission withdrew the order in a new
notification issued on Thursday.
Salman Sufi,
an aide to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, expressed the importance of celebrating
religious harmony and promoting societal cohesion.
This incident
is not the first time Pakistan has imposed restrictions on celebrations and
activities deemed contrary to Islamic values, including Valentine's Day and
certain social media networks.
